Artist Statement
The desire for creating my work comes from an inherent need
to combine images of wall paper motifs with images of birds. I am drawn to that which is exotic, collectible and highly decorated in every day real life. I love extravagance and things that
are over the top bordering on almost too much. I see these as a modern day’s
coming-out party where joyful expressions of ones self can be found.
My pieces
are pulled from bisque molds that are found out in the world. Second hand shops, yard sales, and grocery stores are
all places to find source material. Use of slabs, coils, slips, stamps, and
colorful runny glazes all are my response to European ceramics. I see the slabs
as a blank canvas, ready for a placed composition before being placed on the mold.
Ironically,
while working on these wall paper and bird imagery works I found out that some cultures believe that having any birds depictions of any kind in their house is an omen of bad luck. I see the depiction of the bird as something
that is beautiful. I enjoy and seek out the cross meanings that imagery can
encompass. I enjoy when moments like this happen, juxtaposed not only through
meaning but also where it sits in the world when completed. I see possibility
in having pieces not only layered in imagery but also rooted in cultures
meaning from which imagery is taken from.
